Obituary - Alpine Observer 6 Sep 1918
One of the oldest - if not the oldest - residents of the Bright district in the person of Mr Patrick Monoghan died at the residence of his son Mr G Monoghan at Brookside on Sunday last. Mr Monoghan who had reached the ripe old age of ninety-four years have enjoyed a fairly good health considering his years, until an attack of influenza seized him. This brought about his end. Mr Monoghan was a native of West Meath (Ireland) and came to the colonies when quite a young man. He followed various occupations amongst those being that of cattle raising...He also had a fancy for nuts... and for years had been the largest producer of walnuts in this district. A few years ago Mr Monoghan planted a large number of orange and lemon trees and these have been in production for some time. Mr Monoghan did not take part in public matters, being of a retiring disposition. Among the old residents he was well and favorably known and greatly esteemed by a wide circle of acquaintances. He leaves a mature family of sons and daughters of whom only Mr C J and George Monoghan are now residing in the district. His wife predeceased him many years ago. The funeral took place at the Bright cemetery on Tuesday afternoon and although the weather was anything but favorable a large number of friends followed the remains to their last resting place. At the graveside of the deceased the burial service was ready by Skelley.
